Training | AI Competency Centre
Training
The AI Competency Centre offers training that University members can join at any level of expertise, guiding them through a journey to build confidence in understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI systems, and in selecting the most effective tools for tasks in their practice. We do this through workshops that anybody at the University can join and we also offer custom training to departments and colleges aimed at teachers, students and administrators. Our aim is to ensure sustainable learning, enabling participants to become autonomous, self-directed users of the technology who can also share their knowledge with others through, for example, communities of practice.
Types of training provided:
- Workshops and webinars
- AI SIG Live
- Custom Workshops
- Other training

For Michaelmas 2025, we are offering sessions that are designed for a broad audience who may be unfamiliar with AI or would like to learn more about the field in general.
All our latest webinars and PowerPoint presentations are available on Canvas. Users need to self-enrol in the course to receive notifications when new items are uploaded.
Details for training related to the ChatGPT Edu rollout can also be found with our other upcoming trainings.

Getting Started with AI: Introductory Training for Oxford Staff & Students
For the University-wide rollout of ChatGPT Edu, the rollout team has curated supportive, jargon-free sessions to get all Oxford staff and students feeling confident to start experimenting with these tools in your own work and studies.
There are three offerings to choose from:

AI Special Interest Group Live: Community discussions
A series of open discussions, led by a member of the AI Competency Centre, in theĀ AI Special Interest Group Teams live channel.
This includes the monthly MondAI Roundup session, run by Dominik Lukes, on every second Monday of the month at 12:30. This will cover new models, new tools, new features, new research on AI in academic contexts, and new tips and ideas that people have shared over the last month. We will try to answer questions and make sense of the new developments together.

For those who are already familiar with AI, we offer free AI training sessions to colleges and departments during term time. These can be tailored for students to learn how to apply AI practically in their studies, as well as for tutors and support staff who may want to explore the range of available tools. These sessions are best conducted in person and typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours.
For basic training, please refer to the introductory training offerings launched in Michaelmas Term 2025: GenAI Literacy
If you are interested, please give us more details through our custom training enquiry form - due to resource limitation we can only offer these workshops to groups of more than 20 people. We have already delivered such workshops across multiple colleges, departments and divisions at Oxford.

We aim for our trainings to match the specific skills sets people need, whether technical or non-technical. To assist with this, we have a suggestion form if you are considering a course or training session you would like us to deliver. If we are unable to provide it within our team's expertise, we can direct you to the appropriate resources or bring in external providers to deliver the content or training.
