API Access | AI Competency Centre
API Access
We provide exploratory API access to OpenAI’s models using the OpenAI API platform for researchers who want to investigate the potential of Large Language Models in their research. We can also provide access for small scale short term non-research project. We want to be able to provide exploratory access for all University members that would otherwise not have the opportunity to use the OpenAI API.
If you are not sure if your work fits within the scope of the University-provisioned OpenAI API access please contact us and we would be happy to discuss your use case.
We are investigating the possibility of providing more extensive API access in the future.
OpenAI API Access
To request access follow these steps:
- If you would like access to the OpenAI API, please fill out the request form Requesting OpenAI API Access and explain for which project you intend to use the API.
- We will be in touch with next steps or follow-up questions. Due to capacity, it may take up to five working days for us to review and respond to your request.
- Provisioned projects will be given a usage limit of $300. You will have this limit for six months so that you can explore using the OpenAI API for your project. Due to the high demand on the OpenAI API through our University of Oxford API platform organisation, we are unfortunately unable to offer increased limits on request at this time. This is to ensure that we can provide exploratory access to as many university members as possible.
Once you have access, OpenAI has created a helpful 'cookbook' with example code and guides for accomplishing common tasks with OpenAI API. See the OpenAI Cookbook here.
If you are setting up an API Organisation outside of the Oxford University API Organisation, please ensure you use your SSO (Single-Sign-On) to do this and not your departmental or college email.
If you have a University-provided ChatGPT Edu licence, please note that access to the OpenAI API is separate from ChatGPT. You may request access to the OpenAI API separately as outlined above.
Other APIs
The AI Competency Centre does not currently provide access to other APIs.
We might explore access to other tools as part of project collaborations. If you have a project idea that fits into the scope of the centre and that might require other AI tools, please fill out the expression of interest form.
