Before using ChatGPT, preparing for Personal Development Reviews (PDRs) required significant effort to identify meaningful goals and align them with long-term aspirations, and mapping out the skills needed for senior roles frequently felt overwhelming.
To make the process more strategic, I began using ChatGPT to analyse the skills required for senior positions I aspire to in the next five to ten years. I identified relevant roles, copied their essential selection criteria and listed skills from job descriptions, and fed these into ChatGPT. The model then helped me break down these requirements into actionable PDR goals. It also provided structured, practical suggestions for how to develop each skill.
My PDR goals are now more strategic, measurable, and directly aligned with my long-term objectives. Reviews have become more focused and valuable, giving me confidence in my career trajectory. I can proactively plan professional growth in a way that I would not have had the capacity to do alone, ensuring I build the right skills systematically.
A key lesson has been the importance of iteration and context. The more specific the roles and information I provide, the more targeted and insightful ChatGPT’s output becomes.
