Six world premieres are being performed in New York on Thursday 16th May at a concert themed on Music, AI, and Co-creation. This is the fruit of a major collaboration between the New York based International Contemporary Ensemble and the Centre for Practice and Research in Science and Music (PRiSM) at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Composer Dr Robert Laidlow (Jesus College) and Professor David De Roure (Oxford e-Research Centre and Academic Director of Digital Scholarship in the University’s Humanities Division) are part of this exciting project, which builds on an ongoing collaboration with Prof George E. Lewis at Columbia University. PRiSM’s founding directors were Prof Emily Howard at RNCM and Prof Marcus du Sautoy at Oxford.

The composers of these new works for ensemble have been involved in co-designing  PRiSM’s experimental tools, including new machine listening software for real-time audio gesture recognition developed by PRiSM researcher Hongshuo Fan and David De Roure. The composers are Emily Howard, Sam Salem, Robert Laidlow, Zakiya Leeming, Bofan Ma and Megan Steinberg, and full details of the programme are available at ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble)

David De Roure commented;

“Some people think that AI and music is a new thing, but we’ve been doing it since the 80s – when George E Lewis first performed with his Voyager software.  However, what you’ll hear at this concert is an entirely new perspective on music, AI and co-creation and this is tremendously exciting. It has been fabulous working with ICE”

The concert is at the Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn at 8pm on Thursday 16 May (1am BST 17 May) and will be livestreamed.
