Oxford e-Research Centre Academics Contribute Leadership in MPLS Division and University-wide Roles

Two Oxford e-Research Centre academics have been appointed to leadership roles in the University of Oxford’s Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) Division. Professor of Scientific computing Wes Armour is the new Associate Head (Digital and Information), and Professor of Informatics David Wallom has taken on the role of Associate Head (Capital, Estates, and Safety).
The academic departments in MPLS span the full spectrum of the mathematical, computational, physical, engineering and life sciences, and undertake fundamental research and cutting-edge applied work, in addition to world class student teaching.
Wes Armour will play a pivotal role in forming and executing the division's digital and information strategy. The role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, from high-level strategic planning to representing the division's interests across the university. He will contribute to the overall strategic direction for digital infrastructure, data management, and information governance in MPLS Division and wider university.
David Wallom will support the MPLS Head of Division on a range of capital planning, estates and safety matters, serving as an ex-officio member of the MPLS Divisional Board and General Purposes Committee and will participate in Associate Heads meetings with the Head of Division, covering topics from academic post proposals and administrative restructures to strategic and policy matters.
Oxford e-Research Centre Director Susanna-Assunta Sansone commented on the appointments;
“Congratulations to Wes and David on their new appointments. It is inspiring to see fellow Centre academics contributing to the University’s leadership with their experience, thoughtfulness, and vision”.
The Oxford e-Research Centre is also broadly providing leadership at University-level in the digital space to drive innovation and ensure research excellence. Professor Anne Trefethen, as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) Digital, chairs the Information and Digital Committee, which works with leaders on digital strategy and policy across the University to deliver the digital services needed to support a world-leading research University.
Professor David de Roure chairs the Technology Portfolio Committee, which is responsible for initiatives driving the University’s Digital transformation, including improving IT infrastructure and cybersecurity, and a programme of initiatives towards a system of shared stewardship of data.
Professor Susanna-Assunta Sansone is the Academic Lead for Research Practice and chair of the Research Practice Subcommittee, which provides oversight to ensure that the highest standards of practice are enabled in how research is designed, planned, executed, and reported.
